Depends but # 2 is more unto it as in our differences... it gives us our identity as individuals but as a whole, OUR identity will go through our physical forms by distinctions... like an erectus.
Number 1 is false. One can not have identity if there is no difference from others. If one were equal to all others there would a single identity but one could not see where one began or ended.
